You know things that you imagine to be incredibly difficult, but then once you actually do it, you realize it isn’t hard at all? Like talking to the boy you like, or standing up to speak in front of a crowd, or making lemonade? I don’t know why, but I had it in my head that lemonade would be incredibly difficult and time consuming to make. But I had a bag of lemons in my fridge and I was all citrus dessert-ed out. So, I did a quick google search on how to make lemonade. Imagine my surprise when a couple of hours later I was sipping an ice cold glass of homemade lemonade on my back patio! It is insanely hot in Toronto, I’m talking 44 Celsius hot. For any Americans out there that’s about 111 Fahrenheit. It is definitely time for lemonade with lots of ice!
All that you need to make your own lemonade is about 5 or 6 lemons, a cup of sugar or so of sugar and boiling water. I decided to make mine ginger lemonade and throw in some muddled mint.
The most time consuming part of this entire recipe is the wait time. You have to wait for the lemonade to cool before you can drink it. That was honestly the most difficult part of the entire process. I am not a patient person! You grate your lemons into a pot, squeeze the lemon juice into the same pot. Add your sugar and ginger (if you’re using) add some water, bring the whole thing to a boil, let it boil until the sugar has dissolved and that’s it! I am never buying the synthetic, chemical filled stuff again!
I muddled some mint leaves into the bottom of my glass filled it with ice and poured the lemonade in. I stirred it together to bring the mint leaves up from the bottom of glass and enjoyed some instant refreshment!
The only issue with this lemonade is the lemon zest makes it pulpy. If you don’t like the texture of the zest just use a spoon to strain the lemonade when you pour it into you glass. I kept it refrigerated in an empty wine bottle that I washed out. My first batch is already gone but I plan on making another one soon!
5 or 6 lemons (enough for 1 cup of lemon juice)
3/4 cup sugar (you can add a bit less or more depending on how sweet you like your lemonade)
1 tbsp ginger
5 cups water
Grate and juice your lemons into a large pot
Add sugar and ginger
Heat mixture until the sugars dissolve
Allow to cool
Serve over ice with mint leaves if desired
