Let’s keep things simple on a Saturday. Simple like coconut milk, melted dark chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. Simple like a can of coconut whipped cream. Simple like slippers and pyjama pants and staying in bed as long as your dog will let you.
I ended up using the last of my Christmas stash of dark chocolate for this hot chocolate. This is a fly by the seat of your pants kind of recipe, no serious measurements needed, everything is subject to your own tastes. You could use semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate, you could use a mix of the two. You could use soy, almond or any kind of milk you wanted. I just like how creamy coconut milk out of a can is, but that’s just my preference.
The only danger of whipped cream, is how it hides the heat of the dark chocolate underneath. I have been known to burn my tongue on a cup of hot chocolate, fooled by the cool whipped cream floating on top.

Simple Vegan Dark Hot Chocolate
- 1 cup canned coconut milk
- 4-6 squares dark chocolate
- 1 tbl maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Coconut whipped cream (optional)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon for garnish (optional)
On the stovetop heat the coconut milk, stir in the pieces of dark chocolate until melted. Take of the heat and stir in maple syrup and vanilla.
Top with coconut whipped cream and cinnamon.
